This is the NOM labelling that textiles and footwear must have in Mexico

Etiquetado NOM

Many Spanish and Latin American companies in the fashion and textile sectors operating on the Mexican market, especially since the Free Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Mexico which came into force in the year 2000. It is with good reason that this country is one of the top export destinations for Spain in Latin America.

But the Mexican market has some peculiarities in the labelling of these products at the time of import which must be known so as not to have problems at customs, which would have an impact on unnecessary waiting times and additional costs which entail a setback for the business.

Our subsidiary Logisfashion Mexico has summarised for us the points established in the official Mexican standards, better known as NOMs, the mandatory technical regulations that companies operating in Mexico must know when developing their products marketed in this country, as they indicate how these should be labelled.

The regulation of these NOMs applies to many sectors, such as those related to textiles, clothing, accessories and linens, and footwear, which are currently governed by NOM-004-SCFI-2006, a standard that directly affects all companies during import to market this type of goods in Mexico.

According to this regulation, in general terms the labelling of these products must be written in Spanishclearly so that the consumer can understand, contain the brand, its characteristics, composition (and percentage of content) and description, sizes, care and data of the importer and the manufacturer, such as the country of origin, name and fiscal domicile.

Common errors in the interpretation of NOMs for textile products

Knowing these specific labelling regulations in Mexico is essential for companies that want to sell on this market, so having a trusted local partner such as Logisfashion, with experience and market knowledge as well as knowledge on legal and customs requirements, allows companies to expedite formalities and avoid unnecessary expenses.

Common mistakes we usually encounter include, for example:

  • If the product has a liner, the information on its properties must be present on the label itself;
  • For garment sets such as women’s swimsuits, these must have a specific label on each item separately;
  • In items sold in pairs, it is sufficient for one of the pieces to have the label.

Particularities that must be known to avoid delays in the sale, the aforementioned costs or penalties for not complying with the regulations.

These standards may change and it is important to have good advice to keep up to date. In fact, there is a preliminary draft in progress that will look over compliance with labelling on the products of those sectors and introduce some changes to the current regulations.

At Logisfashion, we offer a wide range of services for retailers, including the UVA service, intended to refurbish the labelling of these products to comply with the regulations, which avoids setbacks during customs operations.
